Ella Fitzgerald is maybe the greatest American singer of the 20th century. If you have never heard her magnus opus the songbook collection, you have to totally check it out. It’s a bit pricey to buy, but is also the sort of thing you can find at the library. It’s basically an anthology of every major popular tune of the first half of the 20th century, and is incredibly, incredibly beautiful without a single clunker in over 16 cds.
Ella’s life is also inspirational. She was orphaned and ended up living homeless for a time as a young girl. The only thing she really had was her talent, and she used it to catch her break by winning amateur night at the Apollo. One of her biggest contributions to jazz was in the improvisational stylings of bebop and scat, where the voice is used in the same way as an instrument, to create an impromptu melodic line without the use of words. The New York Times said of her ability: “Where other singers had tried similar improvisation, no one before Miss Fitzgerald employed the technique with such dazzling inventiveness.”
Now to the astrology: Ella Fitzgerald was born with an exact conjunction of her Sun and Venus in Taurus. Venus rules Taurus and Taurus rules the voice, and this is a major indication of extraordinary singing talent. Moreover, this conjunction quintiles her Uranus, the planet of spontaneity. The quintile is a lesser-known aspect, but an incredible indicator of unique and magical gifts, especially of a creative nature. The Venus/Sun quintile of Uranus gives Ella an amazing ability to improvise musically with her voice.
How High the Moon is her most popularly known scat tune. The video below is truly amazing, when you consider it is totally live. In this day of play back and lip synch, it’s hard to believe there are people out there with this much talent. Sad thing is, there are, but they just aren’t so easy to market….
