The Specials: Ghost Town
Moon square Neptune, Moon square Saturn, Moon into Gemini, Moon conjunct Mercury, Moon sextile Mars

Today’s energy brings up the emotions that arise when the dreamy opposes the dreary. It’s all about how at odds our idealised vision of the world is with the reality out there. The Moon in Gemini adds insight and cynicism, and manages to synthesise these conflicting elements into one, slightly surreal emotional truth. There is hope, though, as the Moon sextiling Mars pushes us to make the world a better place, even if in our own small way.

This energy is really encapsulated by this Specials song. A lot of cities are becoming Ghost Towns these days, with real estate prices kind of making it impossible to have a really diverse community with lots of different types of people and independantly-owned, non-franchise stores or small underground clubs like CBGBs. I read an article in the New York Times today talking about how it is a growing problem that there are fewer and fewer supermarkets in New York City, especially in poorer neighbourhoods, because they just can’t afford the rents anymore, as the owners price them out so they can build hi-cost housing. So more city dwellers have to take transportation to get food. It’s amazing how much has changed in just 20 years. Another great read is the biography of the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. Before he became famous, he supported himself by selling postcards that he had hand-painted on the steps of the Met. And he ended up with enough to pay rent for an apartment in lower Manhatten! I doubt you could even sell anything on the steps of the Met today without a warrant, let alone support yourself. Geez, today’s energy has even gotten to me while writing this post…

Ghost Town was the last major hit the Specials had before breaking up. It’s a shame because their later stuff was so innovative and experimental. The following vids are from a show commemorating the 25th anniversary of the songs release.
