Sofia Coppola makes really beautiful movies; her use of fashion, design, music and tone all blend together to create an ethereal, almost otherworldly atmosphere. Yet, her films stay frustratingly on the surface, and are often accused of lacking real emotional depth. Her extremely refined aesthetic sense somehow refuses to get into the nitty gritty of human existence. The BBC critic Mark Kermode said of her Marie Antoinette: “It’s like a meringue, you sink your teeth into it and the whole thing (collapses) and on the inside there is just a hard nubble of something that’s not very rewarding.”
Astrologically, her chart shows true signs of cinematic brilliance, yet one that is at odds with a more somber view of life, which may be Sofia’s true character underneath it all.
Her incredible natural gifts are shown by the ruler of cinema Neptune conjunct expansive Jupiter while biquintiling her Venus/Mercury conjunction. Biquintiles are often seen as astrological indicators of genius - and here we have one between artistic Venus and the indicator of film-making talent. She may actually have much more artistic, creative talent in film than her father, especially on a purely aesthetic level, but it is her inability to generate the warmth of human foibles on the screen that separates them. Her Mercury/Venus conjunction in non-self-reflective Aries tends to intellectualise emotions and morever squares passionate Mars in laid-back Aquarius, indicating a difficulty in incorporating passion, aggression and heat into her delicately beautiful artwork.
Her need to stay on the surface could actually belie he true nature, which is one much moodier than would appear. Her Sun/Saturn conjunction in Taurus opposes her Neptune/Jupiter conjunction mentioned earlier. She may have a tendency towards depression that she attempts to escape from, as opposed to confront, through her film work. Her Capricorn Moon squaring Uranus also shows a great degree of emotional volatility. Perhaps through the construction of a perfect world, preserved forever in celluloid, she can gain a certain degree of control as shown through her positive Plutonian aspects to her Neptune/Jupiter, Sun/Saturn opposition.
