Dolley Madison’s second marriage made her the first First Lady of the United States. She was known for her remarkable hostessing skills and bravery. She was also the only private citizen ever to be invited to sit in on Congress.

James Madison was Dolley’s second husband. Her first husband died during an outbreak of Yellow Fever. In an astrological chart, first marriages (or long term committed relationships, these days) are signified by looking at the 7th house. If the house is empty, that does not mean one will not get married, just that influences are astrologically neutral in this sector of someone’s life.

For second marriages, however, we look to the 9th house. For Dolley Madison, we see the North Node, which signifies one’s life destiny, conjunct transformational Pluto. This conjunction lights up her Ascendant, literally empowering her identity. Moreover, Venus, the planet of Charm and Love, as well as Mercury, are harmoniously aspected by her Pluto and North Node. The 9th house also rules politics. All together, Dolley’s life really came together and was defined by her second marriage, allowing her to totally shine on the world stage.

Her life also had its sadness. Her only surviving child was a bit of a wastrel who caused her serious financial loss due to his gambling debts. In fact, when the US Library of Congress bought the remaining papers of James Madison, they did so by the creation of a trust fund for Dolley, because they did not want her son gambling this money away. She has Neptune in the house of children (and gambling) squaring her Sun and opposing her Mars. Neptune can signify both disillusion as well as addiction, bringing her a great deal of sadness and restricted circumstances.
