George Carlin was a comedian who combined frank talk with obtuse observations that blended in a way to make insight into the absurd hypocrisies of life.

Carlin’s wit was sometimes overshadowed by his tendency to break the rules and take humour to new territories in terms of language and subject matter. He was a product of his times, and at the time this method actually had currency in terms of moving the culture forward, yet it has also opened up the door to the toilet humour and shocking-for-shocks-sake bland approach that abounds today, where people think saying a curse word or making a drug reference is somehow inherently funny, as opposed to just being lazy and catering to the lowest common denominator.

Carlin, however, combined wit with shock, at a time when society was a bit more repressed than it is today and had a relevancy that a lot of today’s comedians lack. Carlin’s penchant for unapologetic speech can be seen by his North Node in Sagitarrius opposing his Moon/Chiron conjunction in Gemini while forming a t-square to Neptune in Virgo. Gemini rules communication, and wherever Gemini is prominent in a chart, you can be assured that a unique sense of humour and verbal wit is to be found, as well as a really low threshold for BS and mawkish sentimentality.

Chiron strips off the masks of polite hypocrisy inherent to “proper” society. Gemini Moons are a virtual encyclopedia of human experience and are very good at observing human bahaviour in all it’s forms. While the Moon is normally the sign of the emotions, it’s placement in Gemini intellectualises the approach to feeling, giving people with this configuration a surgeon’s detached eye when it comes to the ridiculousness of human interactions. The Moon/Chiron sextile to Venus allowed Carlin to get away with his outrageousness by giving him a healthy dose of charm – the iron fist in the velvet glove effect.

Neptune’s influence here in the T-square can be seen by Carlin’s focus on drugs and escape from authority (as opposed to rebellion) sometimes working at cross-purposes with his talent by taking the focus away from his incredible intellectual brilliance as a wordsmith and humourist, and deflecting it to more puerile causes.

Carlin’s brash, frank talk can be seen from his North Node in Sagittarius. Sagittarians are brutally honest, and their almost brusque speech can often shake things up. His Moon/Chiron conjunction gave him a natural talent for conveying human hypocrisy through humour, but it is its opposition to the North Node in Sagittarius that gave him the impetus to use this humour in an almost confrontational manner in order to take society forward. The Nodes always have an almost destined element to them, one that George Carlin put to good use.

The following is a good example of the Chiron/Moon in Gemini vibe:

“I look at it this way… For centuries now, man has done everything he can to destroy, defile, and interfere with nature: clear-cutting forests, strip-mining mountains, poisoning the atmosphere, over-fishing the oceans, polluting the rivers and lakes, destroying wetlands and aquifers… so when nature strikes back, and smacks him on the head and kicks him in the nuts, I enjoy that. I have absolutely no sympathy for human beings whatsoever. None. And no matter what kind of problem humans are facing, whether it’s natural or man-made, I always hope it gets worse.” – George Carlin

This interview with Carlin on NPR’s Frech Air really demonstrates his love and understanding of language.
